The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effect of time from
mixing of glass ionomer cement to exposing to distilled water on flexural strength and
effect of varnish application. After specimens were made with filling material, glass
ionomer cement(Fuji type ¥± 21, G.C.Co., Japan), experimental groups were divided 5
min,10 min,20 min,30 min according to first exposing time of specimen to distilled water
after mixing. And each group was subdivided with or without varnish application.
Control group was exposed to distilled water at 24 hours after mixing After all groups
were stored at 37¡É distilled water during 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, flexural strength were
measured by three point bending test. The results of this study were as follows. The
flexural strength was the highest in the exposed groups at 30 min after mixing among
varnish groups and non varnish groups. The flexural strength of the exposed groups at
5 min, after mixing was statistically significant according to with or without varnish
application(p<0.05), and that of the exposed groups at 30 min after mixing was not
significant according to with or without varnish application(p>0.05). As compared
varnish application groups and control group, varnish application groups were lower than
control group, especially significantly lower in the exposed group at 5 min after
mixing(p<0.05).
